The federal government of Nigerian banned Twitter from 5th June 2021 until 13th January 2022 when the ban was lifted after indoor negotiations between the government and Twitter executives.
Nigerian government on their own claimed that the platform is being used for Cyber bullying in the country and that they are not of any benefits to Nigerians.
In actual sense, Twitter was banned in Nigeria by President Buhari’s led administration because Twitter deleted tweets made by, and temporarily suspended, the Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, warning the southeastern people of Nigeria, predominantly Igbo people, of a potential repeat of the 1967 Biafran Civil War due to the ongoing insurgency in Southeastern Nigeria.
Buhari’s Political cabal were angry that Twitter deleted president Buhari’s tweet and to get back at the platform decided to hit the social media giants with a ban which lasted for 6 months.
The good news is that ECOWAS court has finally vindicated the social media giant and everyone who stands against President Buhari’s clamp down on social media and news stations who has been hit hard by the president’s iron clad ruling.
